It’s time to play the newest game that’s sweeping the nation! Or, rather, that would be sweeping the nation if this weren’t the very first installment in it ever published anywhere.

Here are two plot summaries.

One is a highly-lauded art film, well-known for its sumptuous cinematography and its brilliantly understated performances!

The other is a cheaply-produced exploitation flick that is remembered for its beautiful star and its wild, over-the-top abandon.

Movie A:

A spoiled-rotten younger woman marries an old business tycoon. Frequently neglected by her husband, she falls in love with her stepson - who is closer to her own age - and they conduct a season-long affair all over the countryside!

Movie B:

A young woman trying to succeed in business is used and manipulated by every man around her and manages to get nowhere, while all of the women who willingly surrender rise in the ranks above her!

Movie A: The Film

That's good film, right there...

The Game is Over (Original title, La Curée) is a fine French film. Based on a novel by Émile Zola and directed by Roger Vadim, it features a young Jane Fonda in the role of Renee Saccard, the younger wife of a wealthy Parisian businessman. It is a tale of love forbidden and betrayed, and is still a favorite of film students for its lush cinematography and heavily symbolic set and costume design.

Movie B: The Flick

A Sweet Sickness is a story thematically related to (but not credited as adapted from) the Marquis de Sade’s Justine: Les infortunes de la vertu, set against the backdrop of Hollywood. In it, Vincene Wallace (a favorite actress of Russ Meyer’s) plays Dee, a young woman with dreams of being a movie star who soon discovers that the men of the industry seem more interested in her private performance than anything she can do in front of the camera. While it is a quickly-knocked-out low budget sexploitation flick, it is nevertheless wildly visual. But even with a DVD release from Something Weird Video, it remains obscure enough that a Google search reveals no screenshots.
